We have a common language: love
The team of Caritas Catolica Oradea has received an unexpected reinforcement for the summer period in the person of Mr. Rainer Pag, a guest volunteer from Germany, who has dedicated his hard-earned days off to volunteer for several months in Oradea, helping both local communities and Ukrainian refugees. He has been involved not only in charity actions, but also in the background work invisible to the public, from unloading goods and sorting donations, to delivering hot meals and supplying charity shops with merchandise. As he emphasized, whichever department of Caritas he was in, he had no problem making himself understood by the staff and the beneficiaries, because even though they did not speak each other's native language, they still had a common language: love, which made all work easier. We talked to the German guest volunteer about his motivation, experiences and plans.

We bring bread to Ukrainian tables
Already in the early stages of the Ukrainian refugee crisis, we learned from field-reports that in Transcarpathia and other regions of Ukraine where there were many refugees, there was a severe shortage of bread. Mills had nothing to grind, and the bakeries which were still functioning had to work with very little flour. Therefore, in the months since February, we have tried to transfer a large part of our existing flour reserves to crisis-stricken regions via several routes – including towards aid organizations in Nevetlenfalu, Munkachevo and Vynohradiv, from where donations have been re-distributed to many other areas of Ukraine.

We donated cat-food to the local shelter
Although Caritas Catolica's mission is primarily to help people in need and human communities, we feel blessed that sometimes we can also help out our four-legged companions. Thanks to the cooperation with the local Food Bank, yesterday we had the opportunity to donate 180 kilograms of dry cat food to the Friends of Cats Oradea Association.

EU project on Homecare ends
The International Day of Nurses provided the framework for the closing conference of the European Union-funded project for the development of Caritas Catolica's home care service. The event took place on the 12th of May 2022, in the festivity hall of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Palace in Oradea. As part of the three-year project, 15 employees were trained and more than 200 patients were treated free of charge at 6 workpoints in Bihor county, plus the surrounding villages. The interesting thing about the event was that in addition to the invited officials, several homecare patients were present too, who were able to get back on their feet thanks to the medical and social care received from Caritas, and their health improved in the long run.
